Ned Goold is an American tenor saxophonist, composer, and arranger recognized for his distinctive inside-outside improvisational style, rich tone, and modern harmonic approach. Best known for his longtime role in Harry Connick Jr.’s band since the early 1990s, Goold has established himself as a respected voice in contemporary jazz through both his sideman work and solo recordings.
His playing blends elements of Charlie Parker’s articulation, Charlie Rouse’s earthy phrasing, and Lester Young’s lyricism, while incorporating advanced harmonic concepts influenced by 20th-century serialism. This combination gives Goold a modern yet deeply swinging sound that has made him a sought-after collaborator.
In addition to his extensive work with Connick, Goold has performed and recorded with artists including Ben Wolfe, Brother Jack McDuff, and the legendary Haitian ensemble Tabou Combo. He first emerged in New York’s jazz scene during the 1980s as an in-demand session saxophonist before gaining wider recognition for his improvisational abilities and bandleader work.
As a bandleader, Goold has released several acclaimed recordings, including Goold, Entropy, The Flows, and March of the Malcontents, showcasing his sophisticated compositions and adventurous improvisational language. Through his recordings, performances, and decades of work on the international jazz circuit, Ned Goold continues to be regarded as one of the most distinctive tenor saxophonists of his generation.
